Rock Island Crossbreed

Description

The Rock Island had some of the strangest one-of-a-kind diesels of any Class-1 railroad. I've got to look it up again to be sure but this early model ALCo was re-engineed at least once and maybe twice... notice the camel-back roofline and the EMD builder's plate. Here it is leaving Chicago with a Rocket.

This was originally an ALCo DL109. It entered the roster in 1941 and seems to have been scrapped in 1968, a couple of years after this picture was taken. This one-of-a kind was nick-named "Christine" by area railfans.

It had a paint scheme that was also nearly unique at the time. I have to go back to my collection of slides but I recall finding somewhere between 12 and 15 different colour schemes on the Rock's roster around this time. And then they switched to a peculiar shade of blue that faded quickly and never looked good... even fresh out of the paint shop.
