Description
Riding westbound on a Northern Pacific passenger extra we meet the eastbound North Coast Limited. One of many non-stop meets.
I found it interesting that frequently the engineers dimmed (or in this case shut off) the headlights at meets. That would not happen today.

Incidentally, the spot where you made this interesting photo was the scene of an amazing snow scene just six months earlier. In early March 1966, NP's Fargo and Yellowstone Divisions (from western Minnesota to Dickinson, ND) were inundated with the blizzard of the 20th Century. Worst in collective memories of that time. Well, this spot under the county road bridge at Berea was literally filled with a huge snow drift, composed of a dreadful combinantion of snow and dirt known to North Dakotans as "snirt." I have an amazing color slide of NP's Plow no. 50--a unique design--clearing the "snirt" away. The "snirt" was so hard-packed that the NP had to use dynamite to break it up before the plows could attack it. Very dramatic scene. I would post the image if I knew how to take whatever precautions one takes to keep it from being misused. Also, not sure how to post images on this site. If you send me your email address, I can send it to you as a low-res image attachment. You could then post it here if you wished, with appropriate credit.
It's a very dramatic contrast between the idylic scene above and what the place looked like only six months earlier!
