Description

Photographed and posted for Mark :iconmarkkarvon:

A westbound Metra Commuter passes under a relic of the old Roarin' Elgin after pulling away from a station stop in Wheaton. This bridge is probably 100 years old and was never removed when the rest of the CA&E right of way was salvaged in the early 1960's. Today it is used by the Illinois Prairie Path.

I have uploaded a detail shot to my other devID.

Traces of the CA&E remain all over the Western suburbs.

You made a special trip just for me. That wasn't necessary but thank you very much.

I guess they're using it for the Prarie Path crossover now as you stated. Back in the '70s one had to get off the path and cross via the road bridge I venture you took the shot from and wind down through the streets. Then you could pick the path back up on the other side.

Some friends and myself actually walked out on the thing back then. There were ties that were missing and some just rotting away. It was a little hairy because you had to cross some big gaps in the ties and you never knew which one of the rotting ones might give away. We stayed pretty close to the metal structure on the sides. We didn't venture too far out and certainly not over the tracks but looking back on it now I think it was a very stupid thing to do. Aah but we were indestructable ignorant kids back then. From the looks of it I'd still be a bit nervous about crossing that bridge.

We used to ride the Prarie Path all the time looking for interesting spots to go exploring. There are actually quite a few areas just off the path that make for some excting exploration for a couple of kids with nothing better to do on a hot summer's day.

Thanks for posting this shot. It brings back allot of memories for me :).
