Slugs in the Daisies

Description

Many railroads created "slugs," units without prime movers but with traction motors for taking advantage of the extra current available at low speeds from the diesel-generator sets in units they were mated to. These two are a bit unusual in that they don't appear to have the extra ballast normally seen on a slug unit and they aren't covered by a hood. These are just traction motors under a stripped frame for hump duty.

It's clear that the IHB parentage was partly NYC. Unit 474 is in IHB black but unit 476 is in the Jade green commonly seen on NYC cabooses and rolling stock of the era.

Interestingly enough these units are still around though the NW2's they were commonly mated with in the 50's, 60's and 70's are long gone.
