I thought at first that this was the El Cap/Super Chief but it can't be. This was taken on March 16, 1968 and the El Cap was scheduled in at 7:20 PM which would be after sundown at that time of year. So this has to be the westbound SF Chief... scheduled in to Joliet at 3:50 PM.

Look at those semaphores.

Crossovers (or diamonds) are fairly common in the USA. This is actually 9 diamonds together... 3 tracks each way.

They're not very common around here, especially with faster trains, so it's also one of the more unusual sights for me :)
