I have been phenomenally lucky lately. Often managing to catch things which are just a little less than common. This is an EMD GP38-2 lease unit. It took me completely by surprise. I was standing here watching the NS units in the distance when this unit drifted quietly up from behind and passed me to slow and stop at the red. This was the only shot I got because there was no sound from the scanner and my camera was off.

In spite of the way this shot appears, I was not on the tracks when he came up on me. This is a stub ended siding and I'm shooting with full tele.

He is coming up on the BNSF west Eola lead and when the signal cleared he crossed over in from of the NS units and entered the yard.

Great shot! Is this is an old CR unit?

rrpix.net indicates that it was built as PC 7947 and then became CR 7947... interesting that the current number still has 3 of the same digits.

I recon she's a sister of 7777 that was the local switcher over on the Connemaugh Division for a lot of years.

Holy moly, now that's some serious heat distortion!
Reply
:iconclassictrains:
It is also atmospheric distortion. Those NS units are about a mile away.

Might I ask what lens you were using?

:iconclassictrains:
It's a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30 with a 12:1 Leica zoom at full extension (420mm equivalent)
