A solid train of special cars loaded with crushed rock creeps south under I-235 and over University Boulevard on the East side of Des Moines.
It was baking hot and 1/2 mile ahead of this train a UP cop is looking for "a guy in a dark shirt messing around the diamond" where the North-South line crosses over the West lead to Shortline Yard.
This cab is one of many units equipped with a camera for capturing pictures of idiots doing stupid things. I wonder how many pictures of me "Uncle Pete" has.
the camera doesn't even look that good... looks like a webcam lol i just have to wonder what the resolution is on them. black and white or color... maybe we should abduct an employee of UP and make them tell us
From what I've seen, it's pretty good. Video, sound, and apparently can be synced with the event recorder. Not sure about the color though - I think these are supposed to have an infrared component to them as well.
Thanks Sam. It's something I've been experimenting with and I liked it here because I also have a decent piece of the train, a signal and the ADM corn processing plant about 2 miles in the distance
It's like an airplane's black box. Unless there's an incident, it resets after so many hours of operating time. When they first started installing cameras, guys were really paranoid! Knew an engineer that was convinced the UP had hidden cameras and microphones on every unit! Don't know how much a microphone could pick up in a spartan cab in the 8th notch with the windows down though!
I always figured if I obeyed basic safety rules and stayed outside of plausible deniability distance ("Yes sir... really? the property is that wide? Amazing. Thanks for telling me.... won't do it again.") and shooting from grade crossings i didn't have anything to worry about.
