A Colorado & Southern (a.k.a. "Burlington Route") EMD shovel nose E5 on the trade-in line at the factory in McCook. This engine is clearly labeled as power for the Texas Zephyr. The Silver Steed was the other half of this set.

Over the years I ripped more than one pair of pants on this fence along the Harbor right-of-way. :-)

There's only one place left in the world to see an E5: the Illinois Rail Museum in Union. She's working overtime with the Nebraska Zephyr now that their steamers are in the shop.
:iconclassictrains:
yes I noticed that... I wanted to double check the number on RRpix.net (9950 was not this units original number) and I saw that 9952 was at IRM lookin beautiful.

Gorgeous engine. Why can't modern engines have that sense of aesthetics?
:iconclassictrains:
cuz they aren't trying to please anyone except the crew who wants to be warm (or cool) and dry and relatively protected and the shop crews who want to be able to get to everything easily. Appearances come last. :-(

Yeah. It's too bad though. You think that some of the streamlined styling of those engines applied to modern units would help improve fuel economy though, instead of those boxy noses and cabs. Oh well, I'm no designer...
