Some days you have no choice but to shoot directly into the sun... and sometimes the results are surprising.

Look at that grade! (Yes this shot is vertical. Look at the tree trunks.) The Monarch Branch of the D&RGW was one of the last segments to be converted from narrow gauge to standard gauge. I caught this pair of GP9's struggling to move a few gondolas around above treeline at end of track in November 1969.

I posted a companion shot to this, Monarch Pass II, several months ago.

scary hey? (I'd love to know the answer to that question.) The Monarch branch should be pretty well documented... a former narrow gauge line.

That's a great picture. I don't think there is a railfan that would not chase a pair of GP9's.
