I couldn't think of a better title than the name of the company that ran this car in revenue service. What is amusing is that this car has been in the hands of the Illinois Railway Museum longer than it was at MER&L. Built in 1927, I shot it 41 years later at the IRM. It's now nearly 40 years later. The IRM restored it a second time in 2004 and additional info about it is available at their website.

I assume there is some ballast under these ties today :-).

That rail gauge seems wider that standard one....

It isn't. It's standard American 4' 8-1/2"
It probably looks that way because of the low angle of the photo.
