Here She Comes by classictrains Here She Comes by classictrains
Kind of funny... remembering traveling in the backseat of my folks cars in the early 50's... going across Nebraska on US 6 watching for headlights and smoke on the horizon. And today... deja vu. Coming south on Indiana 421 and there's the smoke and the headlight again. But this time it's NKP Berk 765.

Do I see a lit fusee on the left rail, or is it my imagination? Very Cool, how often do you get to see a working steam engine on the mainline these days? :D

Nope that's just a light reflection (or a mirage if you prefer).

Well first this isn't the mainline. This is museum trackage.

As far as finding this... well in this case I pay very close attention to the Journal's of watchers who live near me. In this case, Joe, Larry, and James. I don't have time to dig this stuff up but Joe has been paying close attention.

Really how do you get away with shots like this? In the UK even going on any track is like illegal, nevermind of having the freedom to walk on to it and taking a photograph of a on coming train.

Just amazing :D

Well first I'm in the countryside standing on a level crossing that is unguarded by anything but a shaky wooden crossbuck. Second this train is about a mile away and backing up. Third, this is private trackage and the trains run at about 10 mph.

As far as I know, the law around here (Spokane, WA) is that at a level crossing I can be on the tracks until the crossing gates go down. At least, no one has ever harassed me about doing it that way.

When shooting down the rails with a tele, I often take advantage of level crossings for this kind of shot. I've had several railroad personnel and police frown at me but none have ever stopped. I always respect it and move promptly out of the way when the bells, lights, and/or gates go into operation.

I love this shot, it reminds me of the track I used to walk by to get home, it was the quickest way by walking.
Also there were cow paddocks by the track where we used to pick magic mushrooms. It brings back some old memory's (nice work) thank you...

The embankment on the right is former Pennsy ROW. :)

Nice catch!
