The Amtrak California Zephyr is 30 miles out of Chicago and it's already 2 hours late. Unit 3 in the consist is a Cascades F59PHI. I tried to get a shot of it but all I got was a white fog. Behind that red signal, 5 minutes away, also doing 60 on the racetrack is the Southwest Chief, more or less on time.
On a better day, Joe caught a Cascades engine in a similar consist
Nice shot. I've got shots of 90, 60, and 25 heading up an excursion (ex-AOE) train at Grand Canyon Depot. Talk about a surprise appearance!
I remember riding up the coast on Amtrak when I was 10, and we were delayed by a day, due to a derailment, primarily chemical fertilizer cars, apparently. Other than that, what a great trip!
Gotta tell ya Don... it was entirely selfish! I left work early and headed for the Route 59 train station to get some fresh air. When the headlight came in sight I walked to the end of the platform and used the telefoto. The hard part was getting the snow off the UV filter afterwards!
cool shot.....its a shame the gov. let the public rail system deteriorate so much just imagine how cool it would be if there were high speed networks like in europe connecting the major cities and regular commuters hubbing in regional cities and such.....i realise the US is a MUCH larger scale, but still, there is a market and it would help greatly reduce the dependance on cars
Sounds about right for being late. It's never on time at the Omaha Depot. I don't know why they just don't change the times on their schedules so it doesn't seem so late.

I knew something was unusual when I saw the height of that 3rd unit but it was just moving too fast and blowing too much snow.
