CZ by classictrains CZ by classictrains
The Amtrak California Zephyr is 30 miles out of Chicago and it's already 2 hours late. Unit 3 in the consist is a Cascades F59PHI. I tried to get a shot of it but all I got was a white fog. Behind that red signal, 5 minutes away, also doing 60 on the racetrack is the Southwest Chief, more or less on time.

On a better day, Joe :iconjdawg9806: caught a Cascades engine in a similar consist

The CZ is a train that has always been near and dear to me and my family, even though I have yet to ride it. My aunt, Beulah Bauman (nee Ecklund) was a hostess on the CZ from 1964 until 1970 when the original was terminated. When Amtrak formally revived it in 1983, they invited her to host the first trip. It took her all of two seconds to say "Yes!"

Nice shot. I've got shots of 90, 60, and 25 heading up an excursion (ex-AOE) train at Grand Canyon Depot. Talk about a surprise appearance!

I remember riding up the coast on Amtrak when I was 10, and we were delayed by a day, due to a derailment, primarily chemical fertilizer cars, apparently. Other than that, what a great trip!

I want to ride the CZ real bad, it's just hard getting the money for trips like that.

Man, you can feel the cold on this one! Thank for taking one for the team to get this shot Chris!

Gotta tell ya Don... it was entirely selfish! I left work early and headed for the Route 59 train station to get some fresh air. When the headlight came in sight I walked to the end of the platform and used the telefoto. The hard part was getting the snow off the UV filter afterwards!

Interesting power lineup

yup... surprised me!

I knew something was unusual when I saw the height of that 3rd unit but it was just moving too fast and blowing too much snow.

I got some pretty good pics of F59PHI's in Dyer before. I guess I should go there more often lol.

cool shot.....its a shame the gov. let the public rail system deteriorate so much :( just imagine how cool it would be if there were high speed networks like in europe connecting the major cities and regular commuters hubbing in regional cities and such.....i realise the US is a MUCH larger scale, but still, there is a market and it would help greatly reduce the dependance on cars

Sounds about right for being late. It's never on time at the Omaha Depot. I don't know why they just don't change the times on their schedules so it doesn't seem so late.

Have they ever run on time? :P

When i rode we were 16 hours late getting into LA on the Sunset Limited!!

I love the CZ. I've always wanted to ride this train!

It is fun if you have the right attitude.... go for the ride... not for the place at the end.... you won't be disappointed... if you browse my faves you will find a few pix from folks who have done it and have comments that tell you what they saw and enjoyed. I rode it last in 1982 :-(
