Branch Line by classictrains Branch Line by classictrains
A near universal scene... until you understand the detail. This branch line runs under a gate in a 10 foot high fence on concrete posts topped with razor wire. Behind the fence is the USAFE's Bitburg Air Base. The branch line is on the Deutsche Bundesbahn and was for the occasional delivery of very heavy "objects."

This base is closed now. The fence is gone, the property has been returned to the German government, and the buildings have been torn down or converted to civilian use. I called this place home (APO 09132) for two years of my life.

Visit :iconirrational1: for a few more pictures of this time.

Did you have anything to do with warheads? Nuclear or otherwise? My grandfather on my mom's side was stationed in Germany in the 60's, and he dealt with that kind of stuff. I don't know much more than that, I'll have to ask him sometime. It just kind of jogs my memory a bit to see this.

Sorry.... if I told you that I'd have to kill you afterwards. :-)

Did you look at my other devID? The answer is actually pretty obvious if you read the comments under my airplane deviations there. And yes... I worked in the "Zulu" area. Ask your granddad if that phrase rings a bell.

I'm a bit surprised you were allowed to take this picture, although you were in the service.

I was off base in civilian clothes riding my bicycle in the great German Black Forest... it was a different time and I only decided to post it now because this in no longer a military facility.
