The Butte Anaconda and Pacific was a railfan target because of the wire. But it was never 100% electrified. In the 60's maintenance got too expensive so they shut off the power and Geeps ran the show under Montana's wide open skies.

Dang, nice shot! Black and yellow/gold is one of my favorite color combinations, and the mystique of diesel under catenary is just awesome! Being a copper road, I bet they supplied their own wire? :)

It looks like a day when you go to visit a shortline and can only find the power idling in the yard and nothing moving.

Take a look at the link I added to Artist's Comments. It appears these units were bought new and the BAandP always had some rails not under wire.
