Witness the failing economics of the passenger train. The mail contract has gone to trucks and planes... the ancient diesels slog on... and few passengers ride... but the ICC won't let it die.
I forget the train name but here it is tearing up the main alongside the yard in Pueblo pulled by a rare Santa Fe E-unit where I was snapping <a href="www.deviantart.com/deviation/5…
"blue and yellow freight F's earlier in the day. June 23, 1968.
Data available on the internet today suggests that this was the last operating Santa Fe E8. On 10/31/66 it was assigned to the El Paso - La Junta run and remained there until it was removed from service in March 1970. The only other operating E8 at the time of this picture was 81 which was held at Albuquerque for extra service. 81 was retired at the same time as 84. All the other E8's on the roster were shut down by mid 1967.
